The cervix is the lower more narrow portion of the uterus where it joins with the top end of the vagina. Cervical Dysplasia is the term used when abnormal cells are found on the cervix. Dysplasia may or may not lead to cervical cancer depending on the individual’s immune system. Cervical cancer is the second most common malignant cancer in females age 15-34 but it is also a very slow growing cancer.

There are many risk factors that can lead to cervical cancer including:

1) Having multiple sexual partners. Females with 2-5+ sexual partners are 3.46 times more likely to develop cervical cancer. The CDC website states that even people who have only had one sexual partner for their entire lives can still become infected though.

2) Early Loss of Virginity. A woman is 2.76 times more likely to develop cervical cancer if she has had intercourse before the age of 18.

3) Herpes Simplex Type II and Human Papillomaviruses (HPV). HPV has about 40 different strains that are transmitted sexually. More often than not, the individual is unaware that they are even carrying HPV. The strain of HPV called HPV16 is the most common and is found in 90% of cervical cancers and 50-70% of cervical dysplasia. (There has recently been some controversy over HPV actually causing Cervical Cancer and the FDA has already adopted the position that HPV infections do not directly cause cervical cancer. You can read more about this through the link in reference 7 below. For the purpose of this discussion, I will include HPV as a possible “cause” though since it is a pathogen and people may want to remove it from their bodies).

4) Nutritional Deficiencies: If Beta-carotene intake is less than 5,000 IU per day, a woman is 2.814 times more likely to develop cervical cancer. If vitamin C intake is less than 30mg a day, she is 6.717 times more likely to develop cervical cancer. High fat diets and deficiencies in folic acid, B6 and Selenium are also associated with a higher risk.

5) Smoking. A female who smokes 10 or more cigarettes a day is 3.06 times more likely to develop cervical cancer. This increased risk could be due to the smoke depressing the body’s natural immune functions or the fact that smoking causes Vitamin C deficiencies, among other factors.

6) Birth Control Pills: A female who uses birth control pills for 5-8+ years is 3.66 times more likely to develop cervical cancer. Birth control pills decrease the body’s storage and absorption of B6, B12, Folic Acid, Riboflavin, Zinc and Vitamin C. Folic acid deficiency is of special concern as it has been shown that when folic acid levels are high in cervical cells that HPV is blocked from infecting the cell. Birth control pills, however, block cellular uptake of folic acid leaving cervical cells more susceptible to the virus.

7) Transmission during birth. Sometimes, a pregnant mother infected with HPV can pass the virus to her baby but this is rare and happens in less than 2,000 births a year.

HPV infection can only be found through cervical cancer testing because most people do not develop any signs or symptoms of the virus. In fact, the CDC website states that “In 90% of cases, the body’s immune system clears HPV naturally within two years.

The CDC website also states the following statistics:

1) Approximately 20 million Americans are currently infected with HPV.
2) Another 6 million people become newly infected each year.
3) At least 50% of sexually active men and women get HPV at some point in their lives.
4) Each year, about 12,000 U.S. women get cervical cancer.

There has been a huge push by the pharmaceutical industry to have everyone vaccinated for HPV in order to prevent cervical cancer but there is far too much controversy surrounding this vaccine for me to ever even think about recommending it to anyone. Considering the risks mentioned in the list above, there seem to be many common sense strategies to help prevent cervical cancer and/or HPV infection though and there are also a few other Natural remedies that I have found in my research.

1) The CDC website states that the only sure way to prevent HPV infection is to avoid all sexual activity for life, but for most this is unrealistic. Keeping sexual partners to a minimum is probably more realistic and can be helpful.

2) Wait until age 18 or older to have intercourse.

3) Always wear protection from the very first instance of genital contact whether it is vaginal, anal or oral contact.

4) Women should be diligent about getting their annual Pap smear exams so that dysplasia can be detected early and removed before progressing into cancer.

5) Avoid smoking, or at a minimum, reduce consumption to fewer than 10 cigarettes per day.

6) Use natural family planning methods or sterilization instead of taking oral contraceptives or have a non-hormonal Intrauterine Device (IUD) inserted like Paragard. If you insist on taking birth control then make sure to supplement with a quality B-Complex Vitamin, Zinc, Vitamin C and a minimum of 10mg of Folic Acid daily.

7) Nutritional supplementation is key for most people considering the lack of nutrients in the Standard American Diet (SAD). Make sure to take a good quality multi-vitamin and a B-Complex vitamin with special emphasis on Folic Acid. Eat a diet rich in vegetables and fruits.

8) Sandalwood essential oil, even at very small concentrations, has been shown to inhibit the growth of cervical, breast, skin and prostate cancer cells by up to 90% while having little or no harmful effect on normal cells. You should consult a professional before utilizing this method though.

9) Taking 500-1000mg a day of the herb Astragalus helps to activate the immune system to fight off HPV and also helps to activate the p53 gene. The p53 Gene inhibits defective or cancerous cells from multiplying.

10) I have also been told that taking one (1) oz of colloidal silver morning and night for three (3) months can be very effective in eliminating HPV. You must not eat or drink anything within the 30 minutes before or after taking the silver. Unfortunately, I was given this information by a friend who learned it from her Naturopath so I do not have a specific website or book reference to back this information.

Prevention is key and knowledge is power so I hope that this blog topic has given you some knowledge that you can use in your daily routine to help protect you or your loved ones from developing cervical cancer or at least given you some natural remedies to cleanse your body of HPV.

Blood circulation occurs as a result of the heart contracting, which pushes blood out of the heart, and then relaxing which allows the heart to fill with new blood. When blood is pushed out of the heart, it floods the arteries and pushes the existing blood further along until it eventually travels through the veins to return to the heart. This cycle is constantly repeating itself in your body, without any conscious effort on your part, as you go about your day.

“Blood Pressure” is the force of that blood movement against the artery walls and is represented as a fraction of x/x. The first number is the Systolic pressure which represents the phase in which the heart has contracted. The second number is the Diastolic pressure which represents the phase in which the heart has relaxed.

The European Society of Hypertension has the following guidelines in reference to blood pressure levels:

• Optimal — less than 120/80 mmHg
• Normal – 120-129 / 80-84 mmHg
• High normal – 130-139 / 85-89 mmHg
• Grade One hypertension — 140-159 / 90-99 mmHg
• Grade Two hypertension — 160-179 / 100-109 mmHg
• Grade Three hypertension — 180 mmHg or greater/110 mmHg or greater

High Blood Pressure, also known as Hypertension, is a condition where the blood running through your arteries is pushing against them with a force above normal and it occurs in two forms:

1) Primary Hypertension- Has no “identifiable” cause but could be the result of stress, excessive salt intake, chronic dehydration, Vitamin D deficiency, excessive weight, smoking, excessive intake of High Fructose Corn Syrup, heredity factors, general toxemia or even excessive use of stimulants like coffee, caffeinated tea or drugs.

2) Secondary Hypertension- Occurs in response to another disorder such as impaired kidney function, malfunctioning endocrine glands or arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

When blood pressure is above normal, greater force is applied to the valves and the muscles of the heart which can eventually cause the heart to weaken. A weak heart cannot pump blood efficiently which allows it to back up behind the heart resulting in lung congestion. High blood pressure becomes the most dangerous when it develops into Malignant Hypertension which can actually cause damage to various internal organs.

Some natural methods of reducing your risk of hypertension and possible ways of decreasing existing high blood pressure include:

1) Decreasing your intake of salt, including processed and fast foods which often contain a lot of sodium.

2) Avoid stimulants like coffee, black tea, alcohol and drugs.

3) Avoid smoking

4) As always, focus your diet around fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and quality grains.

5) Drink plenty of pure filtered or spring water to ensure expansion of capillary beds and adequate hydration throughout the day.

6) Increase your potassium intake through supplementation or foods like Bananas, Oranges, Apricots, Avocado, Strawberries, Potatoes, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chard, Bell peppers, Eggplant, Squash, Crimini mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, Turmeric, Parsley, Spinach and Broccoli.

7) Reduce excess weight

8) Ensure optimum Vitamin D levels through supplementation or healthy sun exposure. For more information on Vitamin D please read my blog: Vitamin D…A True Hero In The Nutrition World

9) Use relaxation techniques to cope with the daily stressors in your life. Yoga, Deep Breathing, Aromatherapy and Massage can all be helpful.

10) Exercise daily, even if it’s just a 20 minute walk, get out there and do it.

11) Increase your intake of healthy omega 3 fats from sources like Primrose oil, Krill Oil, flax seeds, Walnuts, Avocados and Chia Seeds. Omega 3 fats are known to increase the elasticity of your arteries thus increasing the force which with they can withstand.

12) Drink at least 2 cups of Hibiscus Tea daily as studies have shown this can reduce diastolic blood pressure up to 12 percent.

13) Drink Bran Tea by boiling 1 cup of Bran flakes with 6 cups of water for about 10 minutes then let cool and sweeten to taste with raw honey or lemon.

14) Include extra Niacin (Vitamin B3) in your diet which helps to widen the blood vessels thus decreasing pressure. It is best to take a B-Complex that includes the full range of B vitamins though because taking only one can cause deficiencies in the others. You may want to start at a low dose and gradually increase if you experience flushing common to Niacin.

15) Supplement with about 600mg a day of Magnesium as this mineral is often deficient in the Standard American Diet (SAD). Magnesium rich foods include Spinish, Broccoli, Barley, Walnuts, Almonds, Black beans, Bananas, Avocados, Raisens, Basil, Parsley and Pumpkin just to name a few.

16) Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) can also help to reduce blood pressure by increasing Nitric Oxide production which helps to dilate blood vessels.

17) Take 100-200mg a day of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) or try its precursor Ubiquinol.

18) Reduce your intake of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and its counterpart, Crystalline Fructose which has an even higher concentration of fructose than HFCS and may be even more dangerous. You have to read labels carefully because this stuff is in almost everything. You can find more information on HFCS in my blog: High Fructose Corn Syrup Is Not Fine In Moderation

19) Some essential oils can be beneficial including Clary Sage (Calming), Lavender (Relaxing), Marjoram (Balancing), Melissa, Orange Oil (Mood Enhancer), Geranium (Relaxing) and Ylang-Ylang. You can incorporate them into massage oils or diffuse them in your home.

20) Detoxify your body as built up toxins can impair the various systems of the body and cause cellular damage.

a. There are many Body Detox programs that can last anywhere from 3 to 30 days and sometimes more depending on your commitment. Find one that works for you and try to do it seasonally.

b. Eat plenty of fiber daily to ensure healthy elimination daily

c. Drink plenty of water to flush the system of toxins.

21) Some herbs can be helpful when added to the diet via tea, meals or extracts including Barberry Berberis vulgaris, black cohosh Cimicifuga racemosa, buckwheat, cayenne Capsicum annuum, garlic Allium sativum, hawthorn berries Crataegus laevigata, mistletoe Viscum album[5], onion, parsley Petroselinum crispum, peppermint Mentha piperita, red clover Trifolium pratense, skullcap Scutellaria lateriflora, valerian Valeriana officinalis, and yarrow Achillea millefolium.

The Acne Dilemma

There are many factors, both internally and externally, that play a role in the formation of acne. The three main causes are Hormones, Diet and Hygiene.

Hormone fluctuations are probably the main cause of acne because they cause excess excretion of sebum from the skin. This excess sebum mixes with dirt, pollutants, bacteria and dead cells on the skin’s surface and clogs pores. There are many things that cause fluctuations in hormone levels such as stress, puberty, menopause, steroids, oral contraceptives, etc.

Diet is another key factor in the cause of acne. One third of the toxins from your body are eliminated through your skin so if you are eating an unhealthy, toxic diet then the skin will be burdened with excreting these toxins which can show visibly as acne. Likewise, if the other routes of elimination like the colon and kidneys are not functioning correctly then there will be extra burden on the skin to excrete toxic buildup.

Hygiene is the third contributing factor. Skin cells are dying continuously and tend to build up on the skins surface which impedes detoxification and provides debris to mix with sebum and clog pores. Likewise, dirt and pollutants left on the skin will clog pores and slow down the detoxification process.

The consequences of acne can be devastating. Not only is there the initial embarrassment of white heads, black heads and big red bumps that can bring down anyone’s self esteem but there is also the lingering embarrassment of scars depending on the severity of the acne and skin type. Scars can range from small red marks leaving an uneven skin tone to large depressions in the skin’s surface. Women tend to have the advantage of applying makeup and concealer on embarrassing days but these products can also work against them to clog pores and create an ongoing cycle of blemishes.
Luckily, there are many natural support options available to help prevent, treat and correct acne symptoms.

1. Drink plenty of water to help flush the body of toxins. Use this formula: Your body weight/2= # of ounces of water that should be your minimum daily intake.

2. Eat plenty of fiber to ensure healthy bowel movements each day. Acacia Fiber or Psyllium Husks are both good choices. Unflavored Acacia Fiber Powder can be added to your food to boost fiber content without altering flavor.

3. Exercise regularly to promote detoxification, reduce stress and bring a fresh supply of blood to the skin’s surface.

4. Avoid steroids which cause increased testosterone levels.

5. Try to reduce stress wherever possible. Deep breathing, yoga, meditation, relaxing baths and going with the flow of life can help. Whatever reduces stress for you should be done regularly.

6. Get plenty of sleep as sleep tends to help regulate your hormone cycles.

7. Stay away from refined, processed junk and fast foods. Try to eat a diet plentiful in fresh vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds. Eat organic and/or raw when possible.

8. Surging insulin levels tend to increase testosterone levels so try to keep insulin levels under control by avoiding simple carbs and white and refined sugars and flours.

9. Foods to include in the diet: Carrots, Mango, Spinich, Wheat Germ Oil, Chile Peppers, Pine Nuts, Pumpkin Seeds, Tomatos, Pecans, Peanuts, Almonds, Hazelnuts, Broccoli, Sesame Seeds, Cashews and Seaweed.

10. Vitamin Supplements can help to boost your nutritional intake where your diet is lacking. Vitamins A, C, E and the B complex have all been proven helpful along with Zinc, Calcium, Phosphorus, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Essential Fatty Acids, Lecithin, Probiotics, Silica and Colloidal Silver. Colloidal silver and Vitamin E can also be used topically to reduce bacteria and prevent scaring respectively.

11. Herbs and food to include in your diet via teas or as an addition to meals: Kelp Granules, Burdock root (Arctium lappa), Chickweed (Stellaria media), Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia), Garlic (Allium sativum), Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha), Red Clover (Trifolium pretense), Sarsaparilla Root (Smilax spp), Stillingia (queen’s delight), Walnut (Juglans nigra), Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) and Yellow Dock.

12. Spirulina, in particular, used morning and night over the course of two to three months has been shown to clear the skin. You can find many testimonials online of people who have used spirulina successfully.

13. Expose the skin to fresh air and sunlight but take care not to let your skin burn. Use a natural sunscreen or cover up once your skin turns a light shade of pink to ensure adequate Vitamin D production but prevent sunburn.

14. Cleanse the skin at least once daily but optimally twice with a mild, natural cleanser. Commercial acne washes can alter the skin’s delicate ph balance.

15. Make sure to wash your sheets regularly as oils, sweat and dead skin cells can accumulate on them and clog your pores as you sleep.

16. Use a Dry Skin Brush or other method of exfoliation daily to remove dead cells from the skin’s surface.

17. Essential Oils: Lavender, Tea Tree, Myrrh, German Chamomile, Bergamot, Rosewood, and clove. Always apply essential oils using carrier oils like Olive, Kukui Nut, Grapeseed, Jojoba or Coconut.

18. Aloe Vera Gel can help to speed healing and lessen the damage caused by acne but has not been proven to “cure” acne on its own. Soap containing aloe vera can be used to cleanse the skin and aloe gel can be applied topically.

19. Using the Biobeam 660 once or twice daily for six minutes can help to quickly clear acne. It is a phytotherapy device that emits a low level narrow band of red light but produces no heat so there is no risk of burning delicate tissues.

Acne is something that almost everyone suffers from at some point in their life but taking the above steps towards making yourself healthier can help to reduce or even eliminate breakouts along with all the other health benefits of taking better care of your body, mind and soul.

The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the rate at which energy is released from food when an individual is awake but resting. As food is broken down by each chemical process of digestion, heat is released. This heat is what allows our bodies to remain at a comfortable temperature in order to keep us alive. The BMR is different for everyone and will require a different amount of food for each person.

The Total Metabolic Rate (TMR) is the total amount of energy used by the body per day. When the body begins to move, more energy is used and will thus require more food. So the BMR is basically the base rate at which your TMR starts from. Your BMR is what you wake up with when you first open your eyes and your TMR is what you go to sleep with. People with a high BMR will likely have a high TMR and require more food just to stay alive than people with a low BMR.

These two rates determine your ability to lose weight, gain weight or remain the same based on your food intake and physical activity throughout the day.

There are calculators on the internet that can help you to determine a rough estimate of your metabolic rate but they are calculated in a very generalized manner so don’t rely on them to be exact.
Calories Burned, BMI, BMR & RMR Calculator

What affects your metabolism?

1. The amount of Food you eat. If the number of calories that you take in is more than what your body requires in order to sustain life and the amount of activity you do in a day then you are likely to gain weight and vice versa.

2. Amount of activity. The more active you are throughout the day, the higher your metabolism will be. Someone who works as a waiter, for example, will burn more calories in a day than someone who sits in front of a computer all day.

3. Exercise, and by exercise I mean activity beyond your normal day to day routine, raises your metabolism immediately following the activity and up to 24 hours after, depending on the exercise. Weight lifting, in particular, causes a more permanent rise in your metabolic rate because it increases your muscle mass and muscle uses more calories than fat.

4. Sleep deprivation. It has been shown that people who sleep less than seven hours per night have a lower BMI than people who sleep more so not getting enough sleep lowers your metabolism and you should thus take in less food if you are looking to lose weight.

5. Hormones. Insulin in particular. When you eat sweet foods and candy, your insulin levels rise thus signaling your body that you have an excess of sugar in your blood. In response to this excess sugar, your body begins using sugar for its primary energy source rather than fat. If your body is constantly burning sugar then you will not be able to lose weight because fat stores remain the same or even increase depending on how much sugar you are taking in.

6. Age. As you age, you tend to lose muscle mass and this slows down your metabolism.

7. Climate. Warmer temperatures tend to decrease metabolism. It has been shown that glycogen stores are used up to five times more quickly in cold weather thus switching the body into fat burning mode.

8. The types of food you eat. High protein diets have been shown to raise your metabolism. This may be due to the fact that you are taking in less sugar and your insulin levels are thus lower.

9. Skipping Meals. If you constantly skip meals then your body goes into starvation mode and tries to conserve its fat stores for later energy needs thus lowering your metabolism. Try to eat small frequent meals so that your body knows that it is not in famine and you should never skip breakfast.

10. The Nervous System. Disorders of the nervous system can affect the output of adrenalin, insulin, Leptin and other hormones that affect the metabolism.

11. Hydration. Water is needed by every cell in your body and they will not function optimally if you do not take in enough water.

12. Gut bacteria. It has been shown that obese people have a different makeup of bacteria in their gut and that those bacteria are more efficient at extracting calories from food. Eating fermented foods or taking probiotics can help to balance out the gut flora with more healthful varieties and thus require fewer calories that need to be burned.

13. The thyroid. The thyroid ultimately controls metabolism so anything you can do to support and nourish the thyroid can be helpful to your metabolism. You can read about the thyroid in my previous blog: Thyroid Blog

There are many foods and herbs that can help to boost your metabolism including: Hot peppers, Grapefruit, Apples, Cayenne pepper, Chives, Curry, Garlic, Tomatoes, Kelp, Celery, Broccoli, Beans, Fish, Green leafy vegetables, Blueberries, Hot mustard, Flaxseed, Cinnamon, Strawberries, Cranberries, Extra virgin olive oil, Kola Nut, Burdock Root and Ginseng.

Green tea has been shown to raise your metabolism but you will need about five cups a day to accomplish this. Calcium deficiency has also been shown to slow down your metabolism but this doesn’t necessarily mean that excess calcium will raise your metabolism so don’t go guzzling gallons of milk and eating tons of cheese and yogurt thinking that you’ll lose weight.

There are also a few essential oils that can help to effect your metabolism. Lemon Essential oil helps to increase metabolism and stimulate blood flow. Nutmeg essential oil stimulates the adrenal glands which can help to increase energy. Grapefruit essential oil has also been shown to stimulate your metabolism and reduces cravings. Fennel Essential oil and Geranium Essential oil are both helpful in balancing the hormones which can effect metabolism and weight loss.

When it comes down to it though, eating a balanced diet and keeping an active lifestyle are always your best bet when it comes to maintaining a healthy physique.

Having a good balance of healthy bacteria in the large intestine of the body is extremely important because they not only aid the digestive process but they also support your immune system and provide many other benefits. The large intestine is home to about three pounds worth of bacteria, both good and bad, all working together and competing for nutrients and space. Balancing out the ratio of good to bad bacteria is key to being truly healthy. If the ratio of good to bad bacteria is out of balance then you are said to be in dysbiosis, which unfortunately, most people are.

The small intestine absorbs most of the nutrients from our food but any food that the small intestine is unable to utilize enters the large intestine where bacteria is able to break it down further. In doing this, the bacteria help to release more nutrients for absorption that would have otherwise been unavailable and they also synthesize and release vitamins themselves into our system for absorption. Vitamin K is a well known vitamin that is needed for blood clotting of which bacteria help to produce your daily supply of.

Good bacteria are also known to help prevent general food allergies, allergic inflammation and they help to heal the intestines. They also decrease Gas, Bloating, Indigestion, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Diarrhea, Constipation, Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis, Bad Breath, Body Odor, Candida Yeast Infections, Colds, Flu, Chronic Fatigue and high cholesterol levels.

The balance of good and bad bacteria can influence your body weight too. Studies have shown that slim people have a different mix of bacteria in their gut than obese people. This mix of bacteria proved important because the bacteria found in obese people was more efficient at extracting calories from food and depositing them into fat.

Studies have also shown that athletes can benefit greatly from having the correct balance of healthy bacteria in their gut. Not only do they help to reduce the incidence of infections like colds and flu but they also help the athlete to recover faster. Less sick days and faster recovery times mean more time to train and improve performance.

If you have a baby or are expecting one then it is important to breast feed because breast milk naturally contains healthy bacteria that establish in your baby’s gut and help to boost it’s immune system for a healthy start to life. It is also important to have a healthy balance of good bacteria when giving birth as the vaginal canal is the baby’s first introduction to bacteria which colonizes on the skin and helps to protect the baby from other, more harmful, bacteria.

The methods by which the good bacteria is able to assist the body in all of the above functions is varied. Some bacteria help to stimulate the body’s production of a natural immune system enhancer and virus inhibitor called alpha-interferon while other bacteria help the body to fend off disease by producing a protein that gives the immune system a boost. Some also help the body to detoxify by dislodging accumulated decay from the walls of your intestine so that it can be eliminated while other bacteria produce vitamins that your body needs for overall health.

How you eat has a huge impact on the balance of bacteria in your gut. Sugar and grains tend to feed the bad bacteria which gives them an advantage over the good bacteria. Chemicals in the air and water can also throw off the balance of good to bad bacteria. All packaged and processed foods contain chemicals, some of which are listed on the ingredients label and some that do not have to be, which are very effective at throwing your system out of balance. Even if the packaged food does not contain chemicals, it is likely to be highly refined and contain unnatural amounts of sugar that allow bad bacteria to thrive so make sure to eat plenty of whole raw fruits and vegetables rather than bags and boxes of pre-made junk.

Stress can also wreak havoc on your gut bacteria so doing as much as you can to alleviate stress can help the good guys to survive. Yoga, meditation, EFT; whatever helps to relax you should be in your weekly, if not daily, routine.

Garlic, Green Tea, onions, apples, berries and Ginseng can also help to support the healthy bacteria in your gut due to their high polyphenol content.

Antibiotics play a very large part in disrupting the balance of bacteria in the gut because they tend to kill everything in their path whether it be good or bad so avoiding the use of antibiotics except in emergency situations can do wonders for your health. If you do have to take antibiotics then following them with a strong course of probiotics is highly recommended. Using filtered water is also important as traces of antibiotics have been found in our water supply. Eating organic or pasture raised meat is also important as conventionally raised animals are often fed mass amounts of antibiotics which not only throws off their bacterial balance but also results in traces of antibiotic medication in the food supply.

Probiotic supplements work by establishing colonies of the good bacteria in your intestine which literally crowd out the bad bacteria leaving them little to no room to flourish themselves. It is a competition for living space within your gut and you want to help the good guys win. When you purchase a probiotic you should make sure that it doesn’t need to be refrigerated because the bacteria need to be strong enough to survive your stomach acid…. which is not refrigerated in case you didn’t already know that. Probiotic pearls are usually very small so even people who have trouble swallowing pills should be able to get these down with little effort. Some good probiotics include:

Mercola Complete Probiotics
Renew Life Ultimate Flora
Vitacost Search

You can also eat fermented foods which naturally contain good bacteria and help to give the good guys reinforcements. Fermented foods include: Fermented milk, Kefir, Yogurt, Natto, Miso, Kimchee, Tempeh, Olives, Sauerkraut and Pickles.

Foods high in soluble fiber also help good gut bacteria to thrive. Soluable fiber is found in foods like plums, lemons, oranges, limes, grapefruits, pears, prunes, psyllium seeds, oatmeal, broccoli, carrots, lentils, brussel sprouts, chickpeas, lima beans, pinto beans, and kidney beans; to name just a few.

Fructooligosaccharides and inulin are natural sugars found in certain foods and herbs that are known as Prebiotics. These prebiotics help the probiotics to survive the journey of digestion so that they can reach the large intestine. Some Prebiotics include bananas, chicory root, onions, leeks, fruit, sweet potatoes and asparagus. You can also purchase inulin powder if you feel you would like to supplement:
Now Foods Inulin Powder

One great way to support the healthy bacteria while kicking a bad habit is to substitute your coffee use with an herbal coffee which taste like coffee but are actually very healthy and cleansing for your liver while also having prebiotic properties. You can find herbal coffee here:
Mountain Rose Herbal Coffee
Dandy Blend Herbal Coffee

It is said that 80% of our immune system relies on healthy bacteria in the gut so taking whatever precautions you can to care for them and protect them can go a long way in resisting illness and disease.

Digestion is basically the breakdown of large molecules into small molecules that are better able to be absorbed and utilized by our bodies. Enzymes are essential for digestion because they speed up the chemical reactions needed to break down large molecules into smaller ones.

Before discussing the breakdown of Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats, I should first give a broad overview of the digestive route that food takes as it moves through the body. The first stop in the process of digestion once food has been chewed and swallowed is the stomach whose muscular walls contract and help to mix the food with your gastric juices. This mush of food and gastric juices is called Chyme (kyme). From the stomach, chyme enters the small intestine where it travels passed the liver, gallbladder and pancreas which all contribute to the breakdown and absorption of nutrients. What is left of the chyme then enters the large intestine and is eventually excreted through the anus.

Carbohydrates, protein and fats are all digested slightly differently and understanding those differences can mean a lot when trying to improve your digestion. Different enzymes are needed for each of the three groups of nutrients and if your body is lacking in any of those certain enzymes then your body will have troubles digesting that nutrient.

The majority of the digestion of carbohydrates, for example, begins in the small intestine rather than the stomach. The pancreas secretes an enzyme called amylase which breaks down starches (polysaccharides) into double sugars (disaccharides). Three other enzymes, Maltase (for malt sugar), Sucrase (for cane sugar) and Lactase (for milk sugar) are then used to break down the double sugars into simple sugars (monosaccharides) which can then be absorbed and utilized by the body.

Fat is also mostly digested in the small intestine rather than the stomach but fat must first be emulsified (broken down) by a substance called bile before it can truly be broken down into its basic elements. Once the fat has been emulsified, an enzyme called pancreatic lipase is able to break down the fat into individual fatty acids which can then be absorbed and utilized by the body.

Unlike the digestion of fat and carbohydrates, protein digestion is able to begin in the stomach. The gastric juices within the stomach are naturally composed of Pepsinogen and hydrochloric acid. When protein molecules enter the stomach, hydrochloric acid converts pepsinogen to an enzyme called Pepsin which breaks the negatively charged bonds of the large protein molecule so that it is split up into simpler units called polypeptides. Polypeptides then move to the small intestine where Trypsin is able to break down the positively charged bonds. Another enzyme called Peptidases also helps to further break down the polypeptides into individual amino acids which can then be absorbed and utilized by our bodies.

How smoothly digestion occurs relies on many factors including the presence of the necessary enzymes, the combination of foods eaten, the acidity or alkalinity of the digestive environment and many other factors.

Facts about digestion and ways to improve your digestion:

1) Cooking food tends to destroy the natural enzymes present in the food so eating plenty of raw/uncooked foods can help to ensure the presence of the necessary enzymes and lessen the body’s need to produce them itself.

2) The way you combine foods in each meal can be very important because each set of enzymes can only thrive in a specific PH environment. Enzymes that digest protein thrive in a more acidic environment while enzymes that digest carbohydrates thrive in a more alkaline environment so making sure your meals are made up of the right combination of foods can improve the function of the necessary enzymes. You can find a good description of food combing rules here: Barbara Minton Article

3) Drinking a lot of fluid WHILE eating dilutes your digestive juices and impairs digestion so try to minimize your liquid intake to just a few sips, if necessary, immediately before, during or after meals rather than guzzling tons of liquid. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day when you are not eating though in order to prevent constipation.

4) Antacids like tums and Rolaids hamper your digestive juices so try not to consume these. If you are taking them for heartburn then you should understand that it is actually a lack of hydrochloric acid that causes heartburn rather than an excess so taking antacids just worsens the problem. Try taking Hydrochloric acid tablets instead.

5) Aloe Vera Gel, either fresh from the plant or supplement grade, helps to soothe the stomach lining and can also encourage the absorption of some nutrients. Supplement grade Aloe Vera Gel can be found at most health food stores. I buy mine online from Vitacost Search

6) Healthy bacteria in your intestine help to break down food and also produce much needed nutrients. Taking a probiotic daily can help to balance out the ratio of good bacteria in your stomach. Never buy the probiotics that need to be refrigerated though because if they can’t survive on your shelf then how are they going to survive your stomach acid in order to reach your intestines. Some good sources of probiotics are:
Mercola Complete Probiotics
Vitacost Search

7) Try not to eat when you are stressed out or emotional as this can hinder your ability to digest foods by diverting much needed blood and energy from your digestive tract to other areas of your body.

8) Try not to eat within the 2-4 hours before going to bed so that your stomach has a chance to rest and repair from the constant burden of digestion that it undergoes throughout the day.

9) Always chew your food thoroughly so that it takes less effort for the body to break up the food. Another benefit of chewing thoroughly is that your food has more of a chance to mix with your saliva which contains many valuable enzymes needed for digestion.

10) Remember that gas, bloating and pain are not normal so pay attention to what you are eating and how it is affecting your body. You may be allergic or have sensitivities to certain foods that you never knew you had. Removing those foods from your diet can go a long way in relieving discomfort after meals.

11) There are many herbs and foods that either stimulate digestive juices, tone the stomach or have an abundance of enzymes to aid digestion, so including them in your diet can be helpful. Some of these helpful foods and herbs include: Chamomile, Tarragon, Cayenne, Fennel, Dill, Cilantro, Parsley, Papaya, Peppermint, Spearmint, Sage, Basil, Catnip and Pineapple just to name a few.

12) There are also a few essential oils which can aid digestion including: Bergamot, Clary Sage, Fennel, Dill, Angelica, Anise and Jasmine. A great site to find out how to use herbs, foods and oils to improve digestion is Annies Remedy.

13) Getting more fiber in your diet and making sure to exercise regularly are also standard methods for improving digestion.

If you think this article doesn’t concern you because you don’t eat foods that contain MSG then you should think again because MSG is disguised under many names on ingredient lists and should be avoided at all costs if you value your brain. It can be considered more toxic to your long term health than cigarettes, alcohol and most drugs.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is used as a flavor enhancer in many foods. It is believed that it stimulates glutamate receptors in the tongue which mimics meat-like flavors making a meal more “savory”. It also deceives your brain into craving more food that contains the substance even if you are already full. It is added to canned soups, crackers, meats, snack foods, salad dressings, infant formulas, frozen dinners and MANY, MANY other processed and packaged foods that you find in your local supermarket and even health food stores. It is added to food at restaurants, fast food chains and even school cafeterias.

So What is MSG?

MSG is an Excitotoxin which means that it is an amino acid that also serves as a neurotransmitter in the brain. Neurotransmitters are the chemicals used by your nervous system to communicate messages throughout the body. Excitotoxins, in excessive quantities, over-excite the neurons in your brain to the point of exhaustion which leads to cellular damage and eventually to the cell’s death. Excitotoxins, like MSG and Aspartame, have been linked to learning disabilities, Dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s chorea, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Obesity, Eye Damage, Headaches, Fatigue, Disorientation, Depression and Cancer, just to name a few. Excitotoxins are known to not only promote cancer growth but they also make cancer cells more mobile which allows cancer to metastasize (spread) more easily and quickly throughout your body.

The link between MSG and obesity lies in the fact that MSG not only makes you eat more food than you are actually hungry for but it also reduces the thermogenicity of brown fat which can make people gain weight even when they decrease their caloric intake.

Chemically, MSG is the sodium salt of an amino acid called glutamic acid and is about 78 percent free glutamic acid, 21 percent sodium, and up to 1 percent contaminants. The problem with MSG actually lies in the FREE GLUTAMIC ACID. The fact is that many natural foods contain Glutamatic acid but it is most often bound to other amino acids which helps to slow down the absorption of Glutamate into your blood stream. FREE GLUTIMIC ACID, on the other hand, is absorbed very rapidly and thus travels through your blood stream in dangerously high concentrations that your body is not able to handle.

Almost every organ in the body contains glutamate receptors, which means that as you eat MSG, there are numerous pathways for it to be absorbed and to enter your bloodstream in large quantities. Once it enters your bloodstream, it travels to your brain where there are glutamate receptors on both sides of the blood brain barrier thus allowing glutamate to freely cross the blood-brain barrier and damage your brain.

In addition to the excitotoxic effects of MSG and Aspartame, the metabolization of these substances also produces formaldehyde in the body. This formaldehyde creates a very strong bond with cellular DNA and takes a very long time to remove. As the formaldehyde accumulates, it causes irreparable damage to the cell allowing disease to manifest more easily.

MSG Symptom Complex is an immediate reaction to the ingestion of free glutamatic acid which can initially cause:

1) A burning sensation in the back of the neck, forearms and chest
2) Numbness in the back of the neck, radiating to the arms and back
3) Tingling, warmth and weakness in the face, temples, upper back, neck and arms
4) Facial pressure or tightness
5) Chest pain
6) Headache
7) Nausea
8) Rapid heartbeat
9) Bronchospasm (difficulty breathing) in MSG-intolerant people with asthma
10) Drowsiness
11) Weakness.

Soy has one of the highest levels of glutamate known in the plant kingdom making it particularly dangerous to ingest. Hydrolyzing soy releases this glutamate so make sure to avoid anything with hydrolyzed Soy anything. A 25 year study even revealed that people who eat the most soy in their diet tend to have the highest percentages of Dementia and brain atrophy. You can read about the others dangers of soy here:

Put The Fork Down And Step Away From The Tofu

If that wasn’t bad enough, Emerald BioAgriculture manufactures a “Crop Growth Enhancer” called Auxigrow, which is tainted with MSG. So even if you are miraculously able to avoid MSG in the ingredients of your food, you still wont know if the crop was sprayed with MSG during growth.

So What Can You Do To Protect Yourself From MSG?

Well short of avoiding all processed foods and never eating food that you have not meticulously cooked yourself there are a few herbs and minerals that can help to protect you from excitotoxins like MSG.

Magnesium helps to slow down glutamates from overloading glutamate receptors. Magnesium deficient people are most prone to MSG Symptom Complex and Cardiac Death due to MSG. You can find Magnesium in green, leafy vegetables, whole grains and many beans and nuts. You can also find supplements on the internet or in your local health food store.

Curcumin (found in Turmeric) and the herb Ginko Biloba also help to block glutamate receptors. Turmeric is a spice that you can add to your food and Gingko Biloba can be found in supplement form or as a fresh or dried herb to make teas and tinctures from.

Omega 3 fatty acids also block excitoxins and help to repair cellular damage. You can find Omega 3 Fats in Krill Oil Supplements, Green Lipped Muscle Supplements, Flax Seeds and a few other plant and animal sources.

Zinc and Selenium are also helpful at blocking glutamate receptors. They can both be found in supplement form and in many foods. Brazil Nuts are particularly high in Selenium.

Red Clover Essential Oil has been shown to produce a significant decline in brain cell neuron damage.

While eating out, try to avoid white sauces or Gravy on your food and creamy salad dressings as they tend to contain the most Glutamate. Opt instead for salad dressings that have an oil base or better yet just use olive oil and lemon.

This blog, in no way, covers all the dangers of MSG and other Excitotoxins but you can read the following book for a more detailed account of these poisens.

Any discussion on an antioxidant should begin with explaining why they are important so if you already know about free radicals then skip to the next paragraph or you can continue on here for a refresher. Oxygen is necessary for life but, unfortunately, oxygen also causes chemical reactions within the body that generate free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that are missing electrons and are therefore unstable. In order to stabilize themselves, they must steal electrons from other molecules in the body which causes something called oxidative stress. Oxidative Stress is very damaging to the bodily tissues and causes wrinkles, muscle loss and a whole host of degenerative diseases. Oxidative stress is an ongoing process that cannot be stopped (because we need oxygen in order to live) and if left unchecked, it will eventually cause the tissues to breakdown so much that death will ensue. Luckily for us, we have discovered that antioxidants help to slow this process and that is why antioxidants are praised so highly and are considered so important.

Resveratrol or trans-resveratrol is in the polyphenol category of antioxidants and is produced in the skin and seeds of purple or red grapes as their natural means of inhibiting mold growth. It has also been found in Cocoa Powder, baking chocolate and Dark Chocolate products with cocoa powder containing the highest of those three but not more than red wine. Resveratrol is also produced by raspberries, mulberries and peanuts but at lower levels. Muscadine Grapes are known to have the highest levels of Resveratrol because their skins are thicker than most grapes and they also contain more seeds than most other varieties.

Resveratrol is an alcohol soluble compound which explains why Red Wine is known for its antioxidant power. Red wine contains anywhere from 1.5 to 3 milligrams (1500-3000 micrograms) of Resveratrol per liter while grape skins and seeds can yield 50 to 100 micrograms per gram making red wine a much more concentrated form of Resveratrol. Unfortunately for most of us, drinking any more than one glass of red wine per day actually offsets the benefits of Resveratrol and increases your risk of disease. Also, some red wine may not contain any Resveratrol at all unless the grapes were grown in damp/moldy areas or the grower refused to use fungicides since Resveratrol is the plant’s defense against fungus and mold.

So what is so special about Resveratrol?

This powerful antioxidant is thought to fight Alzheimer’s Disease and other brain disorders due to its very special ability to cross the blood brain barrier. Because it can cross this barrier, it is able to protect the brain and nervous system from oxidative stress and the diseases that come from it.

Resveratrol is also know to switch on a gene called SIRT1 within our bodies that can increase longevity or lifespan up to 70% (about 50 years) and is known to fight the signs of aging along with increasing your fat burning potential. It has been shown to help your liver metabolize fat and then helps to break down stored fat contained in your white adipose tissue.

It can also help to fight Cancer and Heart Disease while lowering blood pressure, raising good cholesterol, preserving red blood cells, protecting your body against fungal infections, assisting your anti-inflammatory response and helping to prevent blood clots that lead to stroke. In addition to all that, it has also been shown to protect the liver and pancreas, reduce cataracts, improve coordination, encourage bone health, reduce disk deterioration, protect joints, guard against Parkinson’s disease, improve erectile performance and help to regulate cell health while protecting against adverse cell changes.

Recent studies have even shown that Resveratrol can help to reduce and possibly even reverse the effects of alcohol induced fatty liver disease. Alcohol induced fatty liver disease occurs when the liver becomes damaged from alcohol abuse and cannot break down fat efficiently. Since the liver is unable to break down fat, the fat starts to build up within the liver eventually causing liver diseases like cirrhosis or fibrosis which can lead to total liver failure if left untreated. Our livers contain two proteins called SIRT1 and AMPK which are vital for breaking down fat in the liver but alcohol abuse tends to inhibit the ability of these proteins to do their job. Resveratrol has been shown to increase levels of these two proteins and their ability to breakdown fat. In addition to this, the higher levels and increased activity of SIRT1 and AMPK helped to decrease levels of proteins that are involved with the build up of liver fat and also increased levels of a hormone called adiponectin which metabolizes fat so not only does it help to break down exisiting fat but it also helps to metabolize fat more efficiently.

Growers have even found that coating their crops with trans-resveratrol can help to prevent mold, yeast, aging and microbial related spoilage.

If you chose to eat dark chocolate for the antioxidant benefits of Resveratrol then choosing a chocolate with the highest percentage of cacao will usually reap more benefits since it is the cocoa powder which contains the compound. 6.7 grams of chocolate a day, which is less than half a candy bar a week, provides the most benefit so don’t think this gives you free reign to gorge yourself on chocolate. A healthier option for eating chocolate is to buy Organic Cocoa powder and make your own by mixing it with honey, which is what I do. I add peppermint essential oil if I want the chocolate to be minty and you can also add different dried fruits, coconut, nuts or anything else you like in your chocolate. All you have to do is mix the ingredients to your taste preference and stick it in the fridge to harden and voila, a healthy chocolate that costs less and you know all the ingredients are safe and natural. Here are just a few sources for the ingredients:

Navitas Organic Cacao Powder

Mountain Rose Organic Cacao Powder

Organic Raw Honey From Vitacost

Tropical Traditions Raw Honey

Vitacost Search Peppermint Essential Oil

If you want the full daily benefits of Resveratrol you should consider taking a supplement that contains whole grape seeds and skins or the roots of the Japanese knotwood but don’t think that the more you take, the better the effects. We don’t know for sure what the effects of high doses may be so stick to the dosage guidelines and try to factor in your other dietary intakes of Resveratrol. Some sources for Resveratrol supplements include but are not limited to:

Purple Defense

NSI Muscadine Grape Seed

Vitacost Search Resveratrol

Vitaminlife Search Resveratrol

American health officials declared a public health emergency as cases of swine flu were confirmed in the U.S. Health officials across the world fear this could be the leading edge of a global pandemic emerging from Mexico, where seven people are confirmed dead as a result of the new virus.

On Monday April 27th, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised its pandemic alert level to four on its six-level threat scale,1 which means they’ve determined that the virus is capable of human-to-human transmission. The initial outbreaks across North America reveal an infection already traveling at higher velocity than did the last official pandemic strain, the 1968 Hong Kong flu.

The number of fatalities, and suspected and confirmed cases across the world change depending on the source, so your best bet — if you want the latest numbers — is to use Google Maps’ Swine Flu Tracker.

Several nations have imposed travel bans, or made plans to quarantine air travelers2 that present symptoms of the swine flu, such as:

* Fever of more than 100
* Coughing
* Runny nose and/or sore throat
* Joint aches
* Severe headache
* Vomiting and/or diarrhea
* Lethargy
* Lack of appetite

Much Fear Mongering Being Promoted

I suspect you have likely been alarmed by the media’s coverage of the swine flu scare. It has a noticeable subplot – preparing you for draconian measures to combat a future pandemic as well as forcing you to accept the idea of mandatory vaccinations.

On April 27, Time magazine published an article which discusses how dozens died and hundreds were injured from vaccines as a result of the 1976 swine flu fiasco, when the Ford administration attempted to use the infection of soldiers at Fort Dix as a pretext for a mass vaccination of the entire country.

WHO and CDC Pandemic Preparedness Seriously Broken

The pandemic warning system has failed as it simply doesn’t exist, even in North America and Europe.

The paradox of this swine flu panic is that, while totally unexpected, it was accurately predicted. Six years ago, Science dedicated a major story to evidence that “after years of stability, the North American swine flu virus has jumped onto an evolutionary fasttrack”.

However, maybe this is precisely what public health authorities desire.

This is NOT the First Swine Flu Panic

My guess is that you can expect to see a lot of panic over this issue in the near future. But the key is to remain calm — this isn’t the first time the public has been warned about swine flu. The last time was in 1976, right before I entered medical school and I remember it very clearly. It resulted in the massive swine flu vaccine campaign.

Do you happen to recall the result of this massive campaign?

Within a few months, claims totaling $1.3 billion had been filed by victims who had suffered paralysis from the vaccine. The vaccine was also blamed for 25 deaths.Several hundred people developed crippling Guillain-Barré Syndrome after they were injected with the swine flu vaccine. Even healthy 20-year-olds ended up as paraplegics.

And the swine flu pandemic itself? It never materialized.

More People Died From the Swine Flu Vaccine than Swine Flu!

It is very difficult to forecast a pandemic, and a rash response can be extremely damaging.

As of Monday April 27, the worldwide total number of confirmed cases was 82, according to WHO, which included 40 cases in the U.S., confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control. But does that truly warrant the feverish news headlines?

To put things into perspective, malaria kills 3,000 people EVERY DAY, and it’s considered “a health problem”… But of course, there are no fancy vaccines for malaria that can rake in billions of dollars in a short amount of time.

One Australian news source, for example, states that even a mild swine flu epidemic could lead to the deaths of 1.4 million people and would reduce economic growth by nearly $5 trillion dollars.

Give me a break, if this doesn’t sound like the outlandish cries of the pandemic bird-flu I don’t know what does. Do you remember when President Bush said two million Americans would die as a result of the bird flu?

In 2005, in 2006, 2007, and again in 2008, those fears were exposed as little more than a cruel hoax, designed to instill fear, and line the pocketbooks of various individuals and industry. I became so convinced by the evidence AGAINST the possibility of a bird flu pandemic that I wrote a New York Times bestselling book, The Bird Flu Hoax, all about the massive fraud involved with the epidemic that never happened..

What is the Swine Flu?

Regular swine flu is a contagious respiratory disease, caused by a type-A influenza virus that affects pigs. The current strain, A(H1N1), is a new variation of an H1N1 virus — which causes seasonal flu outbreaks in humans — that also contains genetic material of bird and pig versions of the flu.

Interestingly enough, this version has never before been seen in neither human nor animal, which I will discuss a bit later.

This does sound bad. But not so fast. There are a few reasons to not rush to conclusions that this is the deadly pandemic we’ve been told would occur in the near future (as if anyone could predict it without having some sort of inside knowledge).

Why a True Bird- or Swine Flu Pandemic is HIGHLY Unlikely

You may not know this, but all H1N1 flu’s are descendants of the 1918 pandemic strain. The reason why the flu shot may or may not work, however, from year to year, is due to mutations. Therefore, there’s no vaccine available for this current hybrid flu strain, and naturally, this is feeding the fear that millions of people will die before a vaccine can be made.

However, let me remind you of one very important fact here.

Just a couple of months ago, scientists concluded that the 1918 flu pandemic that killed between 50-100 million people worldwide in a matter of 18 months — which all these worst case scenarios are built upon — was NOT due to the flu itself!

Instead, they discovered the real culprit was strep infections.

People with influenza often get what is known as a “superinfection” with a bacterial agent. In 1918 it appears to have been Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Since strep is much easier to treat than the flu using modern medicine, a new pandemic would likely be much less dire than it was in the early 20th century, the researchers concluded.

…in order for a “bird flu” or “swine flu” to turn into a human pandemic, it has to find an environment that favors both deadly virulence and ease of transmission.

People living in squalor on the Western Front at the end of World War I generated such an environment, from which the epidemic of 1918 could arise.

Likewise, crowded chicken farms, slaughterhouses, and jam-packed markets of eastern Asia provide another such environment, and that environment gave rise to the bird flu — a pathogen that both kills and spreads, in birds, but not in humans.

Says Ewald:

“By vaccinating just the people most at risk — the people who work with chickens and the caregivers — we can prevent it from becoming transmissible among humans. Then it doesn’t matter what it does in chickens.”

Please remember that, despite the fantastic headlines and projections of MILLIONS of deaths, the H5N1 bird flu virus killed a mere 257 people worldwide since late 2003. As unfortunate as those deaths are, 257 deaths worldwide from any disease, over the course of five years, simply does not constitute an emergency worthy of much attention, let alone fear!

Honestly, your risk of being killed by a lightning strike in the last five years was about 2,300 percent higher than your risk of contracting and dying from the bird flu.6 I’m not kidding! In just one year (2004), more than 1,170 people died from lighting strikes, worldwide.

So please, as the numbers of confirmed swine flu cases are released, keep a level head and don’t let fear run away with your brains.

So is the Swine Flu Getting More or Less Dangerous?

On Sunday, April 26, The Independent reported that more than 1,000 people had contracted the swine flu virus in Mexico, 8 but by the afternoon that same day, Mexican President Calderon declared that more than two-thirds of the 1,300 thought to have contracted the disease had been given a clean bill of health and sent home.

Additionally, the number of actual confirmed cases appears to be far lower than reported in many media outlets, leading me to believe that many reporters are interchanging the terms “suspected cases” and “confirmed cases.”

Interestingly Mexico is the ONLY country in the world where someone has actually died from this disease. Mexico has reported 152 fatalities in flu-like cases in recent days, seven of which have been confirmed as swine flu. Another 19 patients have been confirmed as having swine flu but surviving. About 2,000 people have been hospitalized with symptoms. By contrast, the United States has had 64 confirmed cases, five hospitalizations and no deaths from US Citizens. On April 29th CNN reported the first swine fatality in the US, however this was actually a child from Mexico that died in Texas.

According to the World Health Organization’s Epidemic and Pandemic Alert and Response site; as of April 27, there are:

* 64 laboratory confirmed cases in U.S. — 0 deaths (reported by CDC as of April 29)
* 26 confirmed cases in Mexico — 7 deaths
* 6 confirmed cases in Canada — 0 deaths
* 1 confirmed case in Spain — 0 deaths

Additionally, nearly all suspected new cases have been reported as mild.

Personally, I am highly skeptical. It simply doesn’t add up to a real pandemic.

But it does raise serious questions about where this brand new, never before seen virus came from, especially since it cannot be contracted from eating pork products, and has never before been seen in pigs, and contains traits from the bird flu — and which, so far, only seems to respond to Tamiflu. Are we just that lucky, or… what?

Your Fear Will Make Some People VERY Rich in Today’s Crumbling Economy

According to the Associated Press at least one financial analyst estimates up to $388 million worth of Tamiflu sales in the near future — and that’s without a pandemic outbreak.

More than half a dozen pharmaceutical companies, including Gilead Sciences Inc., Roche, GlaxoSmithKline and other companies with a stake in flu treatments and detection, have seen a rise in their shares in a matter of days, and will likely see revenue boosts if the swine flu outbreak continues to spread.

As soon as Homeland Security declared a health emergency, 25 percent — about 12 million doses — of Tamiflu and Relenza treatment courses were released from the nation’s stockpile. However, beware that the declaration also allows unapproved tests and drugs to be administered to children. Many health- and government officials are more than willing to take that chance with your life, and the life of your child. But are you?

Remember, Tamiflu went through some rough times not too long ago, as the dangers of this drug came to light when, in 2007, the FDA finally began investigating some 1,800 adverse event reports related to the drug. Common side effects of Tamiflu include:

* Nausea
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea
* Headache
* Dizziness
* Fatigue
* Cough

All in all, the very symptoms you’re trying to avoid.

More serious symptoms included convulsions, delirium or delusions, and 14 deaths in children and teens as a result of neuropsychiatric problems and brain infections (which led Japan to ban Tamiflu for children in 2007). And that’s for a drug that, when used as directed, only reduces the duration of influenza symptoms by 1 to 1 ½ days, according to the official data.

But making matters worse, some patients with influenza are at HIGHER risk for secondary bacterial infections when on Tamiflu. And secondary bacterial infections, as I mentioned earlier, was likely the REAL cause of the mass fatalities during the 1918 pandemic!

Where did This Mysterious New Animal-Human Flu Strain Come From?

Alongside the fear-mongering headlines, I’ve also seen increasing numbers of reports questioning the true nature of this virus. And rightfully so.

Could a mixed animal-human mutant like this occur naturally? And if not, who made it, and how was it released?

Not one to dabble too deep in conspiracy theories, I don’t have to strain very hard to find actual facts to support the notion that this may not be a natural mutation, and that those who stand to gain have the wherewithal to pull off such a stunt.

Just last month…the American pharmaceutical company Baxter was under investigation for distributing the deadly avian flu virus to 18 different countries as part of a seasonal flu vaccine shipment. Czech reporters were probing to see if it may have been part of a deliberate attempt to start a pandemic; as such a “mistake” would be virtually impossible under the security protocols of that virus.

The H5N1 virus on its own is not very airborne. However, when combined with seasonal flu viruses, which are more easily spread, the effect could be a potent, airborne, deadly, biological weapon. If this batch of live bird flu and seasonal flu viruses had reached the public, it could have resulted in dire consequences.

There is a name for this mixing of viruses; it’s called “reassortment,” and it is one of two ways pandemic viruses are created in the lab. Some scientists say the most recent global outbreak — the 1977 Russian flu — was started by a virus created and leaked from a laboratory.

So while it is morally unthinkable that a drug company would knowingly contaminate flu vaccines with a deadly flu virus such as the bird- or swine flu, it is certainly not impossible. It has already happened more than once.

But there seems to be no repercussions or hard feelings when industry oversteps the boundaries of morality and integrity and enters the arena of obscenity. Because, lo and behold, which company has been chosen to head up efforts, along with WHO, to produce a vaccine against the Mexican swine flu?

Baxter! Despite the fact that ink has barely dried on the investigative reports from their should-be-criminal “mistake” against humanity.

According to other sources, a top scientist for the United Nations, who has examined the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Africa, as well as HIV/AIDS victims, has concluded that the current swine flu virus possesses certain transmission “vectors” that suggest the new strain has been genetically-manufactured as a military biological warfare weapon.

The UN expert believes that Ebola, HIV/AIDS, and the current A-H1N1 swine flu virus are biological warfare agents.

Factory Farming Maybe Source of Swine Flu

Another theory as to the cause of Swine Flu might be factory farming. In the United States, pigs travel coast to coast. They can be bred in North Carolina, fattened in the corn belt of Iowa, and slaughtered in California.

While this may reduce short-term costs for the pork industry, the highly contagious nature of diseases like influenza (perhaps made further infectious by the stresses of transport) needs to be considered when calculating the true cost of long-distance live animal transport.

The majority of U.S. pig farms now confine more than 5,000 animals each. With a group of 5,000 animals, if a novel virus shows up it will have more opportunity to replicate and potentially spread than in a group of 100 pigs on a small farm.

With massive concentrations of farm animals within which to mutate, these new swine flu viruses in North America seem to be on an evolutionary fast track, jumping and reassorting between species at an unprecedented rate.

Should You Accept a Flu Vaccine — Just to be Safe?

As stated in the New York Times and elsewhere, flu experts have no idea whether the current seasonal flu vaccine would offer any protection whatsoever against this exotic mutant, and it will take months to create a new one.

But let me tell you, getting vaccinated now would not only offer no protection and potentially cause great harm, it would most likely be loaded with toxic mercury which is used as a preservative in most flu vaccines..

I’ve written extensively about the numerous dangers (and ineffectiveness) of flu vaccines, and why I do not recommend them to anyone. So no matter what you hear — even if it comes from your doctor — don’t get a regular flu shot. They rarely work against seasonal flu…and certainly can’t offer protection against a never-before- seen strain.

Currently, the antiviral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza are the only drugs that appear effective against the (human flu) H1N1 virus, and I strongly believe taking Tamiflu to protect yourself against this new virus could be a serious mistake — for all the reasons I already mentioned above.

And, once a specific swine flu drug is created, you can be sure that it has not had the time to be tested in clinical trials to determine safety and effectiveness, which puts us right back where I started this article — with a potential repeat of the last dangerous swine flu vaccine, which destroyed the lives of hundreds of people.

Topping the whole mess off, of course, is the fact that if the new vaccine turns out to be a killer, the pharmaceutical companies responsible are immune from lawsuits — something I’ve also warned about before on numerous occasions.

Unfortunately, those prospects won’t stop the governments of the world from mandating the vaccine — a scenario I hope we can all avoid.

How to Protect Yourself Without Dangerous Drugs and Vaccinations

For now, my point is that there are always going to be threats of flu pandemics, real or created, and there will always be potentially toxic vaccines that are peddled as the solution. But you can break free of that whole drug-solution trap by following some natural health principles.

I have not caught a flu in over two decades, and you can avoid it too, without getting vaccinated, by following these simple guidelines, which will keep your immune system in optimal working order so that you’re far less likely to acquire the infection to begin with.

* Optimize your vitamin D levels. As I’ve previously reported, optimizing your vitamin D levels is one of the absolute best strategies for avoiding infections of ALL kinds, and vitamin D deficiency is likely the TRUE culprit behind the seasonality of the flu — not the flu virus itself.

This is probably the single most important and least expensive action you can take. I would STRONGLY urge you to have your vitamin D level monitored to confirm your levels are therapeutic at 50-70 ng.ml and done by a reliable vitamin D lab like Lab Corp.

For those of you in the US we hope to launch a vitamin D testing service through Lab Corp that allows you to have your vitamin D levels checked at your local blood drawing facility, and relatively inexpensively. We hope to offer this service by June 2009.

If you are coming down with flu like symptoms and have not been on vitamin D you can take doses of 50,000 units a day for three days to treat the acute infection. Some researchers like Dr. Cannell, believe the dose could even be as high as 1000 units per pound of body weight for three days.

* Avoid Sugar and Processed Foods. Sugar decreases the function of your immune system almost immediately, and as you likely know, a strong immune system is key to fighting off viruses and other illness. Be aware that sugar is present in foods you may not suspect, like ketchup and fruit juice.
* Get Enough Rest. Just like it becomes harder for you to get your daily tasks done if you’re tired, if your body is overly fatigued it will be harder for it to fight the flu. Be sure to check out my article Guide to a Good Night’s Sleep for some great tips to help you get quality rest.
* Have Effective Tools to Address Stress . We all face some stress every day, but if stress becomes overwhelming then your body will be less able to fight off the flu and other illness.

If you feel that stress is taking a toll on your health, consider using an energy psychology tool such as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which is remarkably effective in relieving stress associated with all kinds of events, from work to family to trauma. You can check out my free, 25-page EFT manual for some guidelines on how to perform EFT.
*Exercise. When you exercise, you increase your circulation and your blood flow throughout your body. The components of your immune system are also better circulated, which means your immune system has a better chance of finding an illness before it spreads. You can review my exercise guidelines for some great tips on how to get started.
* Take a good source of animal based omega-3 fats like Krill Oil. Increase your intake of healthy and essential fats like the omega-3 found in krill oil, which is crucial for maintaining health. It is also vitally important to avoid damaged omega-6 oils that are trans fats and in processed foods as it will seriously damage your immune response.
* Wash Your Hands. Washing your hands will decrease your likelihood of spreading a virus to your nose, mouth or other people. Be sure you don’t use antibacterial soap for this — antibacterial soaps are completely unnecessary, and they cause far more harm than good. Instead, identify a simple chemical-free soap that you can switch your family to.
* Eat Garlic Regularly. Garlic works like a broad-spectrum antibiotic against bacteria, virus, and protozoa in the body. And unlike with antibiotics, no resistance can be built up so it is an absolutely safe product to use. However, if you are allergic or don’t enjoy garlic it would be best to avoid as it will likely cause more harm than good.
* Avoid Hospitals and Vaccines In this particular case, I’d also recommend you stay away from hospitals unless you’re having an emergency, as hospitals are prime breeding grounds for infections of all kinds, and could be one of the likeliest places you could be exposed to this new bug. Vaccines will not be available for six months at the minimum but when available they will be ineffective and can lead to crippling paralysis like Guillain-Barré Syndrome just as it did in the 70s.

Lucky for us, we have discovered that antioxidants help to slow this process and that is why antioxidants are praised so highly and are considered so important.

Superoxide is a particular type of Free Radical that is present in your body partly due to the actions of the immune system as it attacks invading pathogens. If I understand it correctly, superoxide can almost be thought of as a byproduct of the immune response. Unfortunately, this byproduct is a very toxic free radical because it needs to steal three electrons in order to stabilize itself while most free radicals only need to steal one electron. Because of this, Superoxide is recognized as one of the main causes of oxidative stress on the body.

Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is considered to be a powerful antioxidant. SOD is a class of enzymes that encourage the reduction and oxidation of superoxide into its basic components of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide thus rendering it less harmful to our cells because oxygen and hydrogen peroxide do not need to steal electrons in order to be stable.

There are three types of SOD namely SOD1, SOD2 and SOD3. SOD1 helps to protect the cell’s cytoplasm, SOD2 helps to protect the mitochondria from free radical damage and SOD3 lies outside the cells. There was a study that showed that mice lacking SOD2 died within several days after birth due to massive oxidative stress. Mice lacking SOD1 develop a wide range of problems including hepatocellular carcinoma, an acceleration of age-related muscle mass loss, an earlier incidence of cataracts and a reduced lifespan.

As an antioxidant, SOD may help to reduce wrinkles and heal scar tissue, wounds and burns more quickly. It has also shown protective benefits against harmful UVA radiation while also delaying the time it takes to get sunburned. It helps to rejuvenate cells and to reduce cellular destruction and also helps to support healthy joint structure and function.

SOD’s antioxidant activity may be particularly helpful for athletes due to the amount of free radicals generated during aerobic activity. SOD has also been shown to support arterial function and health thus improving your cardiovascular system and has been shown to effectively reduce lactate buildup in the muscles during exercise.

As well as an anti-oxidant, SOD is also an anti-inflammatory which can help manage inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis and other inflammatory diseases like Alzheimer’s. It may also be helpful against the long term damage caused by smoke, radiation and cancer drugs.

SOD can be found in Cantaloupe, barley grass, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, wheatgrass, and most green plants but the process of digestion destroys the enzyme before it reaches the small intestine where it can be absorbed so food sources are pretty much useless. You can find SOD in supplement form but it needs to be taken in a form that will reach the small intestine without being destroyed by your stomach acid during digestion. There are three forms which will ensure that the enzyme is not destroyed.

1) Sub-lingual (under the tongue) supplements which are absorbed into the bloodstream immediately and bypasses the digestive process.
2) Enteric coated pills which will protect SOD from stomach acid as it goes through the digestive tract.
3) A form known as GliSODin where SOD is combined with a wheat protein called Gliadin which helps to protect it from the digestive processes. People allergic to wheat may have problems with this form though.
